Most people have a garage. It is usually the first thing you see when you come home and it can be one of your favorite places in the house if done right. Garages are great for storing tools, gardening equipment, bicycles, and so much more! But as time passes these items often become cluttered and disorganized. If this sounds like your garage then follow these helpful tips on how to get started with organizing them!

1) Invest In Overhead Storage Systems

Overhead storage systems are great for holding the tools you use the most. You can buy them online or at your local hardware store. They are adjustable so you can put them up high or low depending on your space. With overhead garage storage, you can hang up bikes, garden tools, rakes and shovels, axes and hatchets, ladders, vacuums and so much more! There are different types of overhead storage systems you can buy depending on the items you need to hold. For example,  if you need to hang up ladders then you would want a different system than if you just wanted to store tools. The overhead storage systems are often adjustable so that won’t be an issue.

2) Built A Shelf

Built a shelf for things you use less often. This is good for the items that you only need to get out every once in a while. Purchase some wood, nails, paint if necessary, and make yourself a nice shelf. If your items are heavy enough, attach them directly to the wall of the garage. Place screws into the wall at an angle to ensure that you can support the weight. If you don’t know how to do it on your own, there are plenty of DIY projects found online or you can hire a handyman to do it for you.

3) Make A Pegboard

Make a pegboard. This is great for holding tools and other items that are hanging by their handles, like rubber mallets or spades. You can buy these boards at your local hardware store or purchase them online depending on what size you need. They come in a variety of sizes and colors. Attach the pegboard to a wall or place it on top of a shelf. Make sure that you have plenty of space around the board for hanging items because there will be a lot going on in this area.

4) Set Up Your Workbench Properly

A workbench is a great place for holding all of your tools and items that are small enough to fit there. However, you need to set it up properly so that everything is within reach. If you have a workbench then you should also have cabinets to store your tools inside. This way it is within reach but out of sight until you need them. Place a magnetic strip on the wall right above your bench so you can hang wrenches and other small items from it. You can also buy or make a bench-top organizer. This will keep all of your smaller items within reach as you move around the garage. You could also place a pegboard behind the workbench to hang hammers and screwdrivers from, so they are out of sight but still within reach!

5) Install Cabinets

Cabinets are a great way to store your larger items. If you have cabinets, make sure they are big enough to hold all of the bulky items in your garage such as bags of sand or fertilizer. The cabinets should be placed at head height so you don’t have to bend down while reaching for items. Be careful though not to overfill them or they won’t shut properly. In addition to cabinets, invest in shelf dividers and drawer organizers for added space within the cabinet. This is good for items like paint cans and smaller screws.

6) Label Your Boxes

Label each box with what it holds. This is good for storage solutions like the cabinets, shelves, and bins you bought. There are many different types of storage systems available like clear containers or ones that only show the front of what it is holding. You should also group similar items together. For example, all flower pots can go in one box, all gardening tools in another, etc. Label every box so you know what it is holding. Clear labels are great because you can see what the box holds right through the label! This is a great way to organize your garage because you can put things away right when you are done using them.

7) Get Rid Of Clutter

Get rid of clutter because it can quickly become a problem. Sort through everything you have and decide what is no longer needed. Categorize items into three groups: items that you’re keeping, items that need to be thrown away, and items you can give or sell to someone else. Keep only the things you truly need and get rid of everything else. We frequently gather so much stuff that we are unsure what to do with it. This is why you should clear out as much debris as possible and maintain your garage space neat and tidy. You’ll be able to find and access anything you need in a matter of seconds this way.

Garages are great for storing tools and items, but they can become cluttered over time. It’s important to take the time to organize your garage so that you know where everything is and it won’t get lost in a pile of junk. There are plenty of ways you can go about this task by organizing by type or grouping similar items together, making labels with pictures, separating them into different categories, etc. The ideas we’ve provided should help you get started thinking about how you can effectively use the space in your own garage as well as keep track of what goes there! Whether that’s an overhead storage solution or cabinets, there are plenty of ways to make sure your garage is the most organized space in your home. Don’t let clutter build up or you’ll never find what you need again!
